The Challenge

The Client designed a new classroom touchscreen device to help teach preK and kindergarten students collaboration skills through an extensive suite of animated games that children can play in groups of 2 to 4 students at a time. Teachers can then log in to an online reporting dashboard to evaluate each child’s performance and progress. 

The Client built the prototype devices, the animated games, and the reporting User Interface, but they still needed a team of engineers to implement the software in a scalable production environment so they could bring the product to market. 

The Solution

Tricon Infotech, an experienced developer of educational technology software products, assembled a team of engineers to turn the games into an application that would run on the local device; build a cloud-based system to manage users, data, and games; and implement a suite of analytics into a browser-based reporting system. 

The development involved taking 60+ games with sophisticated animation, multiple characters, and numerous data sources (user actions, camera recordings, etc.) and running them in a Windows-based application suitable for operation on the device (with a Bluetooth keyboard for teachers) in a classroom setting.  

The new gaming application leveraged web technologies and game frameworks to function in a Windows application. This meant that the device could download additional games silently in the background while children were playing other games. It also meant that if the classroom Internet access were interrupted during play, the device could continue to collect and preserve data locally and upload the information to the Client’s servers later. 

Because the product is geared toward children, privacy was of paramount importance. All private data is encrypted, and the system utilizes three-token AWS Cognito Services for login, ensuring the highest level of access security. 

A key component of the experience is the browser-based reporting module, where teachers can review how their students interacted with one another during the games through replay videos and visualized data. The Client designed the User Interface and defined the reporting requirements, and Tricon built the back-end data collection and analytics and mapped the data to the new dashboard. 

The Result

With the new production-ready software, the Client was able to bring the device to market and share the collaborative experience with young students. The company is now able to incorporate this user feedback into new iterations of the hardware and software.
